Functional Neurology
What is Functional Neurology?
Functional Neurology is a modern specialty within the field of neurology that focuses on treating dysfunctions of the central and peripheral nervous systems through various safe, non-invasive assessments and treatment interventions. It is based on the concept of “Neuroplasticity.” This is essentially the ability of the central nervous system to change its function in response to its environment and how it is stimulated.
What does a Functional Neurologist Do?
A functional neurologist is trained to assess your general health and nervous system, looking for imbalances or variances from appropriate function and relating these dysfunctions to your symptomatic complaints, or limitations in your performance goals. We do this by observing and understanding the interplay of the various sensory, motor, and regulatory systems of your nervous system, looking for evidence of excessive, impaired, or inappropriate function and then working back from there to understand how this may relate to your concerns.
Treatment Protocols
Functional Neurology treatments are simply the activation of those same sensory, motor, and regulatory systems, but thoughtfully and with purpose, with your individual needs in mind. To do this we may utilize specific eye movement exercises, balance exercises, visual/ light stimulation, auditory stimulation, or any stimulus that influences the nervous system in a way that improves the function of compromised nerve centers. Through proper stimulation we can help recalibrate systems that are underperforming (think balance centers) or sometimes even over performing (think anxiety or a racing heartbeat). Done properly, we can rehabilitate efficiency and appropriate function in those systems, until they can regulate themselves on their own in the most functional and healthful way. Bringing harmony to these out of balance systems can bring profound harmony to the whole body system.
How Long Until I See Results?
The nervous system is very dynamic. It does not take months to find out if our care is working for you. When we engage in treating your nervous system, we are constantly activating and then looking for a response, until we find the “recipe” for the best response for you. Because treatment is a constant interplay between doctor and patient, in real time, it does not take long to determine if the course we are on is working, and if not, what else may work. Often this process takes just a few days, other times it takes a few weeks or months, depending on complexity and chronicity.
Bear in mind, we do NOT use “cookie cutter” protocols. We look at you as an individual and design our protocols based on what makes the most sense for you. The best results come when the patient is committed to participating in care and doing whatever home exercises or activities they are prescribed. The better we communicate and work together, the faster we can resolve your problems.
